SCI-FI PULSE GETS A FIRST LOOK AT THE NEW NOVELS!

"For female readers, Queen’s writings contain an emotional authenticity that will resonate for them ... Moreover, Queen’s work in Darkchylde: The Ariel Chylde Saga will also appeal to fans of Stephen King and Ray Bradbury. Conveying the psychological horror and intelligence of King’s and Bradbury’s writings, Queen’s writing offers a glimpse into what it would be like if King and Bradbury wrote Young Adult novels."

2011 marks Darkchylde's 15th Anniversary, and hot on the heels of new collected editions from Image Comics, comes one of the most elegant and evocative fine art pieces ever offered to the collectible statue market. At 1:4 scale, and a leggy 29" tall, the smoldering, haunted visage of troubled teen Ariel Chylde with her blood red metallic dreamscape dress makes a memorable, and imposing presence.

“The tale of cursed southern teen who can shed her skin to become any of the creatures from her many recurring nightmares is one of the few independent characters to have been realized in comics, trading cards, action figures, skateboards, apparel, mini busts, and more” says creator and writer, Randy Queen, “so to see her 15th Anniversary celebrated with new collections, new comics and novels in the works, legendary director John Carpenter on board to helm the feature film, and more 3d product than we've ever had at one time is tremendous. Our goal with the fine art statue was not just to create another comic book sculpture, but to manifest a classical and memorable vision of the eternal war between beauty and destruction, between hope and despair. Everyone has their own internal monsters that wish to emerge, and I think that's why the troubled plight of Ariel Chylde has proved so resonant, and continues to endure as we position her in new media."

Dreams of Darkchylde TPB & Darkchylde Movie Poster Giveaway at Comic-Con!

We just got word on a very cool giveaway happening on Saturday, July 23rd, at the San Diego Comic-Con at the Image Comics booth fans of both the Darkchylde franchise and horror icon John Carpenter won't want to miss.

From Dread Central:

Randy Queen, the creator of Darkchylde, will have the new book Dreams of Darkchylde Vol. 1 available at the Image booth (#2729) at San Diego Comic-Con. John Carpenter wrote an intro for it, and he and Randy are participating with Image in a giveaway on Saturday of 100 signed copies of the book. The books will be pre-signed by John since he has to be in Kentucky at a con there and signed in person in San Diego by Randy.

Synopsis: Ariel Chylde is the girl cursed to become any of the creatures from her many Nightmares. But, have the shadows circled all her life? Now, go deeper...into her past...into her dreams...where fears roam and truth is never a friend!

There will also be 100 posters available for the upcoming Darkchylde movie pre-signed by John (he's directing the film) and signed on Saturday at the booth by Randy and producers Sarah Queen and Sandy King.

In addition, they'll be showing off a three-foot custom statue done of Ariel for the event.

Pretty cool, right? See you there on Saturday from 5:30-6:30 pm.

"Author Randy Queen amazingly brings out the emotion in this coming-of-age tale. His characters feel real and relatable-- Ariel's narration is well-written and expressive, brimming with teen angst and self-discovery. "

"Well-balanced in horror, comedy, and fantasy this is surely one of the most memorable monster hunters in comic-book history."

New 'Dreams' Collection Reviewed!

"...carries on with the much lauded fictional world created by Randy Queen"

"The writing can almost stand alone without the addition of art as the author has
each word flow into the other with an aim toward the poetic. That target is struck
in most cases with bits of alliteration, rhyme, and other poetic device. His plot
is carried upon a sea of intensity as it ebbs and flows from one dire situation to
the next with little room for breaks."

JOHN CARPENTER TO DIRECT DARKCHYLDE

Master of Horror set to bring you the girl of your dreams. John Carpenter is onboard to direct Darkchylde, based on the comic by Randy Queen about a good hearted southern teen cursed to become the creatures from her many recurring nightmares. Every time Ariel Chylde transforms, she sheds her skin and a new nightmare emerges from her Id to act out her deepest, darkest impulses.

John Carpenter and Sandy King's Storm King Productions have allied with Randy and Sarah Queen's Darkchylde Ent. to produce the film, following the release of test footage created by Richard Taylor's Academy Award Winning Weta Workshop. (The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, King Kong, The Hobbit)

John Carpenter says, “Randy Queen's hijacked angel, Ariel Chylde, is the best young female character since Laurie Strode in Halloween. Bringing Ariel and her dark mysteries to life should be quite an adventure for us all.”

Adds Queen, "I'm beyond thrilled that John Carpenter, one of our most important, and legendary genre directors, and the man responsible for such landmark films as THE THING, and HALLOWEEN has come onboard with Weta Workshop to help bring the nightmarish tale of Ariel Chylde to the silver screen. As a horror fan, the thought of Carpenter and Weta together, beautiful dreamscapes, and multiple transformations, makes me incredibly excited. There is a reason nearly his entire catalogue has, or is being remade, and it's because Carpenter is a genius."

Offering a stark contrast to super hero comics, Darkchylde was a breakout sensation of the late 90's and early 2000's, garnering immediate acclaim, and an unusually large female fanbase. The property went on to outsell Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman in both domestic and foreign audiences, and has been realized in toys, trading cards, apparel, lunch boxes, mini busts, and more recently a hit crossover with Top Cow, and a statue from PopCultureShockToys. Fans can now read the Ariel Chylde saga online via Wowio and Darkchylde.com and a trade paperback collecting the "Legacy" and "Redemption" series of books ships in January from Image Comics.

John Carpenter is an acclaimed director, screenwriter, producer, and composer, who won an academy award for his short film while still just a student at USC. His storied career includes such seminal films as Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, Starman, Christine, In the Mouth of Madness, Assault on Precinct 13, They Live, and The Fog. His most recent outing, The Ward, starring Amber Heard as an institutionalized woman tormented by a sinister spirit, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Weta Workshop Darkchylde Test Footage Revealed:
See the teaser trailer exclusively at Newsarama.com

Darkchylde is the tale of a good hearted southern teen cursed to become the creatures from her many recurring nightmares. Creatures that destroy all she holds dear. Offering a stark contrast to super hero comics, the title was a breakout sensation of the late 90's and early 2000's, garnering creator Randy Queen immediate acclaim, and an unusually large female fanbase. The property went on to outsell Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman in both domestic and foreign audiences, and has been realized in toys, trading cards, apparel, lunch boxes, mini busts, and more recently a hit crossover with Top Cow, and a statue from PopCutureShockToys: PopCultureShockToys.com Having entered the digital age, fans can now read the Ariel Chylde saga online via Wowio.com.

With proven pedigree in pocket, Randy and Sarah Queen's Darkchylde Ent. allied with Richard Taylor, and the Academy Award Winning Weta Workshop, along with many of the team who helped bring Lord of the Rings, and King Kong to life, and began breathing filmic life into Darkchylde. Only Newsarama has the exclusive test footage.

"What we're showcasing for Newsarama readers is hard won, self produced, test footage for a proposed 20-25 million budgeted Darkchylde film," says Queen. "We are the underdogs, so it's important to not expect Avatar or Iron Man footage, you know? We're giving a glimpse behind the curtain of a smaller, more intimate horror film we are cultivating, something on the scale of Carrie, but with a more impressive FX resource for Ariel's dreamscapes and the creatures she becomes."

"If I can draw it, we can shoot it, it's just a matter of getting the right people involved," offers Queen. "I'm not interested in having someone give me a nickel to go away so they can reverse engineer something that doesn't need it. We've spent 8 years carefully cultivating this film project, and Weta's celebrated craftsmanship ensures a certain artistic integrity as a personal sentiment for horror fans. A lot of love has gone into creating the haunted world of Ariel Chylde. Most interesting is that every time she sheds her skin, a new creature emerges we've never seen before, so audiences never know what to expect. It's a terrific, market proven concept. And as a fright fan, I want to see the new ideas. I want to see fresh characters that could become as vital to this generation as Freddy, Jason and Michael were to mine, and at this budget level, well crafted horror shows terrific return. We've got the script. Darkchylde is ready to fly. We are actively seeking producing partners and independent financing." Verifiable inquiries may be sent to Randy@darkchylde.com

PEOPLE LOVE THE DARKNESS/DARKCHYLDE: KINGDOM PAIN!

From Cosmic Book News

5 STARS.

Awestruck. That’s what I am. I’ve just finished reading The Darkness & Darkchylde: Kingdom of Pain and I’m awestruck. Awestruck by the writing. Awestruck by the art. Awestruck by the coloring. Awestruck.

Queen’s writing never fails to entertain. At times it soars – reading like poetry: "As the roses cast off icy prisons and petals take to wind like once shackled spirits sailing into sky." At other times it’s gritty: "I’d probably get along with this crazy bitch if she wasn’t trying to kill us". At all times it captivates interest.

Sarah Queen’s coloring is jaw-droppingly gorgeous – solidifying Randy’s place in the top tiers of comics artistry. Comics art and coloring literally don’t get any better than that seen in Kingdom of Pain.

Right off the bat this story has three things going for it: The dialog, the narrative and the art. Randy Queen has spent most of his career writing and drawing Darkchylde, so it goes without saying that he knows the character. What some may find shocking is how well he nails the character of Jackie. Miss Happy and Jackie have almost three full pages of dialog going back and forth at each other all of it is interesting.

The art is simply beautiful -- Queen's pencils are extremely detailed making him perfect to draw all three characters. He puts his own mark on the Darkness character by giving him new armor. Darkchylde is drawn as a walking contradiction. She's sexy and yet lacks any real confidence; Queen captures this with her facial expression throughout the story.

This issue does a lot more than pair two franchises in a one-shot. It actually sets out to tell a meaningful story in both universes. It adds character to Jackie while breathing new life into Darkchylde. Top Cow could really have a hit if it figured out how to add Darkchylde to the Artifacts Universe.

The dialogue Queen has created between Jackie and the little girl Miss Happy is just fantastic. They engage in some great back and forth in a bid to find out who each other is and what they want. It seems very natural, has some dry humor, and it really sucks you into the story. Like Jackie, you find yourself willing to go anywhere with the story.

At one stage Jackie remarks, "...it's absolutely stunning," and that's definitely true with this one-shot.

Message from Randy:

Sorry for not updating in so long, we've devoted every waking hour crafting the oversized 40 pg. Darkchylde Crossover. Sarah and I did the art, writing, coloring, lettering and design on this huge book, and we are pleased with the final results and hope fans will be happy. Also taking up a lot of our time is the production of the new Darkchylde statue from PopCutltureShock. We will also be releasing the Weta Test Foortage for a Darkchylde feature film very soon. Now that the crossover is done, I will be turning my attention to finishing up existing commissions, and hope to get moving on Starfall again. I am currently posting in the TopCow.com Forums, and will have a deviant art page up in June. Be on the look out for Crossover Variants, and brand new art prints this summer.

Thank you for your interest in our work,

NEW THE DARKNESS DARKCHYLDE CROSSOVER SIGNATURE

7/25/09: THE DARKNESS DARKCHYLDE CROSSOVER!

You asked for it, you got it! Ariel Chylde returns to comics, courtesy of Top Cow, Jackie Estacado and a new, corrupted Darkness Armor! KINGDOM PAIN arrives Christmas 2009!

THE RETURN OF DARKCHYLDE AND THE RELEASE OF STARFALL

THE DARKNESS AND DARKCHYLDE CROSSOVER

LOS ANGELES, Calif., July 25th, 2009 – Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that Randy Queen, the creator of Darkchylde, and colorist Sarah Queen will be teaming up with Top Cow Productions to reintroduce Ariel Chylde to comics. This December, fans can expect to see the brand new crossover event, Darkness/Darkchylde, descending on finer comic book stores near you. Within this spectacular new crossover there will be an 8 page exclusive preview for the long-awaited series, Starfall, and the premiere of Jackie’s corrupted Darkness armor.

"The positive reaction to the Starfall announcement last year was noticed, as was the many fans asking for the return of Ariel Chylde. So this evolved naturally from that reaction,” says creator Randy Queen.

“We didn't just want to offer up an appetizer,” explains Randy Queen, “we wanted it to matter. So it was decided that, because the crossover sort of brings Ariel back to the marketplace, that art should imitate life and the story should reflect this.”
So what can fans expect from this exciting new crossover event?

“Jackie inhabits Ariel's Nightmares and is responsible for awakening her from a seven year, self imposed exile. Inversely, because he is in her Nightmare world, when he summons his Darkness Armor, it comes over corrupted, and reconfigured by the place. You get two fresh perspectives on fan favorite characters, and it's the kind only seven years of distance, and objectivity can bring."

"I'm throwing down the gauntlet and making a statement with this book. We took the time to ensure you get polished, finished craft, with beautiful colors, and it's a fun story where important, organic things happen which should be of interest to old and new readers. “

“It's my first crack at the Darkness, and the first new Darkchylde story since our last issue special in 2002. Plus you get 8 pages of Starfall on top of it. Ariel can become her nightmares. Jackie is a nightmare. You'll see the differences and similarities in tandem, and get a taste of something completely new to boot. It's one exciting package," concluded Queen.

“Randy Queen is one of those renaissance guys, who has played with every aspect of comic book creation as well as film and video games. He and Sarah have a fierce dedication to their craft and putting forward the absolute highest level of excellence,” commented Top Cow Publisher, Filip Sablik, “Randy actually also began his career at Top Cow, so in a way this is fun homecoming for all of us.”

Fans can be on the lookout for The Darkness/Darkchylde in December 2009. The stand alone special will be a 48 page comic book.
